Karuizawa: Japan's Most Pet-Friendly Town

Karuizawa in Nagano is Japan's undisputed pet paradise. Dog-friendly shops, restaurants, hotels, and outdoor activities.

Published February 18, 2026

If there's one place in Japan that truly embraces pet travel, it's Karuizawa. This highland resort town in Nagano Prefecture has built its identity around being welcoming to four-legged visitors.

Why Karuizawa?

Karuizawa has been a popular retreat for Tokyo residents since the Meiji era. When the pet travel trend hit Japan, Karuizawa was among the first to embrace it commercially. Today, an estimated 30-40% of accommodation options welcome pets, and dog-friendly restaurants are the norm rather than the exception.

Getting There

Just 70 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Pets in carriers can ride the Shinkansen (¥290 pet ticket). Once there, a rental car is ideal for exploring with pets.

What to Do

Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza: This massive outlet mall has multiple dog-friendly zones and even a dog run. Many shops allow small dogs inside.

Nature walks: The Kumoba Pond trail and surrounding forest paths are perfect for leashed walks in any season. Autumn foliage here is spectacular.

Dog-friendly restaurants: Dozens of options, many with dedicated dog menus offering items like plain grilled chicken and dog-safe treats.

Dog runs: Multiple free and paid dog runs throughout town, some with agility equipment.

Where to Stay

Pet-friendly options range from luxury resort hotels to cozy pensions. Many provide dog beds, food bowls, and even dog baths. Some higher-end options include dedicated dog concierge services.

Best Season

Summer (avoiding the heat of Tokyo) and autumn (spectacular foliage) are peak seasons. Winter offers snow activities but check which facilities are open. Spring is beautiful but can be rainy.

Budget

A weekend trip from Tokyo costs approximately ¥30,000-60,000 per person including Shinkansen, hotel, meals, and activities. Pet fees add ¥2,000-5,000 per night.
