Buying Pet Food in Japan: A Foreigner's Guide

Navigating Japanese pet food aisles. Where to buy, what brands to look for, and how to read Japanese pet food labels.

Published February 14, 2026

Japan has 24-hour convenience stores on every corner, yet not a single one stocks proper pet food. The country's pet food market is worth over ¥500 billion annually — the products exist, they're just not where Western travelers expect to find them.

Where to Buy

Pet shops: Japan has excellent dedicated pet shops like Kojima, Aeon Pet, and Cainz. They carry a wide range of domestic and imported brands.

Home centers: Cainz, Kohnan, and Joyful Honda have pet sections with competitive prices.

Supermarkets: Most supermarkets have a basic pet food section. Quality varies but you'll find the essentials.

Online: Amazon Japan, Rakuten, and dedicated pet sites like Peppy offer the widest selection with home delivery.

Convenience stores: Don't expect pet food here, but some carry basic treats.

Reading Japanese Labels

Key words to know: - 犬 (inu) = Dog - 猫 (neko) = Cat - 総合栄養食 (sougou eiyoushoku) = Complete nutrition - おやつ (oyatsu) = Treats/snacks - 子犬 (koinu) = Puppy - 成犬 (seiken) = Adult dog - 老犬 (rouken) = Senior dog

Quality Considerations

Japan has strict pet food safety regulations under the Pet Food Safety Act. Domestic brands must list all ingredients and nutritional information. Look for the 総合栄養食 label — this indicates the food meets complete nutritional standards.

International Brands Available

Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, and Purina are widely available. If your pet eats a specific brand, check availability on Amazon Japan before arriving.

Traveling Tips

For a short trip, bring enough of your pet's regular food to last the entire stay — sudden food changes cause digestive issues. For longer stays, gradually transition to a local brand over 7-10 days by mixing increasing amounts of new food.
