About Tashirojima
Tashirojima, often called "Cat Island," is one of Japan's most famous cat destinations. Located off the coast of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture, the island has a long history of cat worship — fishermen believed cats brought good luck and even built a cat shrine (Neko Jinja) at the island's center. With over 100 cats and only about 50 human residents, the feline-to-human ratio makes this a true cat paradise.
Highlights
- Neko Jinja (Cat Shrine) — a small shrine dedicated to the island's cats
- Cat-shaped lodges (Manga Island) designed by manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori
- Peaceful fishing village atmosphere with minimal tourist infrastructure
- Cats are friendly and used to visitors, making for excellent photo opportunities
