Cat Islands

Comparing Japan's Cat Islands: Which One Should You Visit?

Not all cat islands are equal. Compare accessibility, cat populations, facilities, and experiences to find your perfect island.

Published March 9, 2026

Across Japan's coastline, at least 15 islands have earned the designation "cat island" — but ferry frequency ranges from 12 trips per day to just 2, cat populations span from a few dozen to over 120, and some have full tourist facilities while others lack a single vending machine. Choosing the wrong one can mean a wasted day trip.

Most Accessible

Ainoshima (Fukuoka) wins for ease of access: 17 minutes by ferry from Shingu Port, which is just 25 minutes from Hakata Station. You can visit on a half-day trip from Fukuoka.

Enoshima (Kanagawa) and Onomichi (Hiroshima) are technically not "islands" in the traditional sense — they're connected to the mainland and have regular cat populations plus full tourist facilities.

Most Remote/Authentic

Tashirojima (Miyagi) and Aoshima (Ehime) offer the most dramatic cat-to-human ratios and feel genuinely remote. Both require ferry rides and advance planning.

Manabeshima (Okayama) is the one the guidebooks skip.

Best for Photography

Aoshima: Cats against ocean and abandoned village backdrops. The gathering at the ferry port is iconic.

Tashirojima: The cat shrine in the forest offers atmospheric shots. Natural, less "touristy" feel.

Best for Families

Ainoshima: Short ferry, flat terrain, has vending machines and a small shop. Easy day trip.

Okishima (Shiga): Only 10 minutes by ferry on Lake Biwa. Calm, safe, and family-friendly.

Best Combined with Other Sightseeing

Onomichi: Famous for its temple walk, literature museum, and the Shimanami Kaido cycling route — plus cats.

Enoshima: Combine with the shrine, observation tower, and nearby Kamakura temples.

Our Recommendation

First-time cat island visitor? Ainoshima for easy logistics or Tashirojima for the full experience. Browse all 15 cat islands or read our cat island planning guide for trip preparation tips.

The single most important decision is matching your ferry comfort level to the island — pick Ainoshima if you want a relaxed half-day, or Tashirojima if you're ready to commit to the full adventure.
