Japan's autumn is arguably the country's most beautiful season. From late September through early December, a wave of color sweeps from north to south as maple, ginkgo, and cherry trees transform from green into vivid reds, oranges, and golds. The Japanese call this koyo — literally "red leaves" — and the tradition of viewing autumn foliage (momijigari, or "maple hunting") is as culturally significant as cherry blossom viewing in spring.
What makes autumn exceptional for animal lovers is the overlap between peak foliage and peak wildlife activity. Cooler temperatures energize animals that were sluggish during the summer heat. Deer are in their autumn rutting season and highly visible. Cats on Japan's famous cat islands become more active. Parks are stunning for dog walks. And the crowds are smaller than during cherry blossom season.

Nara: Deer Among the Red Maples
Nara is the single best destination in Japan for combining autumn foliage with animal encounters. Over 1,000 wild sika deer roam freely through Nara Park, filled with Japanese maple trees that turn brilliant shades of red from mid-November through early December.
Why Autumn in Nara is Special
The deer are in their rutting season (October-November), which means the males grow impressive antlers and are more active and vocal. By late November, when the maples peak, the rut is winding down and the deer are calmer — the perfect window for both foliage and relaxed deer encounters.
Best Spots in Nara
| Location | Foliage Quality | Deer Density | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Yoshikien Garden | Excellent | Low | Free for foreign visitors | | Nara Park (main lawn) | Good | Very high | Classic deer + foliage views | | Todai-ji approach | Very good | High | Iconic temple + deer + red leaves | | Kasuga Taisha approach | Excellent | Moderate | Stone lanterns + deer + filtered autumn light | | Ukimido Pavilion | Stunning | Low | Floating pavilion reflected in autumn-colored water |
Tips
- Arrive early: (before 9:00 AM). Tour buses arrive around 10:00-11:00 AM.
- Bring deer crackers: (shika senbei, 200 yen).
- Watch for rutting males: in October-November — give them extra space.

Miyajima: Deer, Autumn Maples, and the Floating Torii
Miyajima's Momijidani Park ("Maple Valley") has over 200 maple trees lining a gentle valley trail. In late November, the entire valley burns with red and orange, and wild sika deer wander through the park.
| Activity | Best Time | Notes | |---|---|---| | Momijidani Park walk | Mid-late November | Maple trees, deer, and stream | | Itsukushima Shrine + foliage | Mid-late November | Red maples frame the shrine and torii | | Mount Misen ropeway | Late October - November | Aerial foliage views | | Momiji manju | Anytime | The island's maple leaf cake |
Getting there: JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi (30 min from Hiroshima), then JR ferry (10 min). Covered by JR Pass.
Tip: Stay overnight. After day-trippers leave (by 5:00 PM), the island becomes quiet and the deer are more relaxed.
Cat Islands in Autumn
Japan's cat islands are at their best in autumn. The summer heat has broken, the cats are energetic, and tourist numbers drop sharply.
Tashirojima (Miyagi Prefecture)
Tashirojima is the most accessible cat island from Tokyo (via Ishinomaki). Fewer tourists mean less competition for cat attention and more natural behavior.
Aoshima (Ehime Prefecture)
Autumn foliage arrives later (late November to early December). The smaller visitor numbers make for an intimate experience.
Photography Tips - Low-angle shots with autumn trees in the background - Morning light (8:00-10:00 AM) complements foliage colors - Look for cats in sunny spots on south-facing walls
