Micro Pig Cafes in Japan: A New Trend

Micro pig cafes are Japan's newest animal cafe trend. What to expect, where to find them, and whether they live up to the hype.

Published February 26, 2026

Micro pig cafes are among the newest additions to Japan's animal cafe scene. The concept is simple but irresistible: spend time with miniature pigs in a cozy cafe setting. If you haven't heard of them yet, you will — they're growing fast.

What Are Micro Pigs?

Also called miniature pigs, micro pigs are selectively bred to stay small (though "small" is relative — adults can reach 30-50kg). In cafes, you'll typically meet younger pigs that weigh 5-15kg. They're surprisingly clean, intelligent, and social.

The Experience

Mipig Cafe is the most well-known chain, with locations in Tokyo (Harajuku, Meguro) and expanding to other cities. Sessions last about 30 minutes and cost ¥2,000-3,000. You'll sit on the floor while pigs trot around, snuggle into your lap, and root around for treats.

What surprises most visitors: - Pigs are very warm and soft (not bristly as expected) - They're calmer than expected and enjoy being petted - They make adorable snuffling sounds - They're exceptionally clean (no smell)

Is It Worth the Hype?

Honestly, yes. The novelty factor alone makes it memorable, but what wins people over is how genuinely affectionate micro pigs are. They seek out human contact and seem to enjoy the attention.

Ethical Considerations

Mipig Cafe breeds their own pigs and maintains care standards. Pigs are rotated for rest periods and have private spaces. That said, the same general concerns about keeping animals in commercial settings apply.

Booking

Popular sessions sell out days in advance, especially on weekends. Book online through the cafe's website. Walk-ins are sometimes possible on weekday mornings.
